# Detailed ping, MTR and traceroute API

> Run four-packet ping, MTR or UDP traceroute from a regional EDIS Global Looking Glass node.

`POST /api/v1/probes`

Runs a detailed measurement from the regional node receiving the request. This route has a different contract from the hub's `/api/v1/probes` route.

## Parameters

Send a JSON object with `Content-Type: application/json`.

| Field | Type | Required | Meaning |
| - | - | - | - |
| `target` | string | Yes | Public IPv4/IPv6 address or DNS hostname |
| `test` | string | Yes | `"ping"`, `"mtr"` or `"traceroute"` |
| `family` | string | Yes | `"auto"`, `"4"` or `"6"`; include explicitly on this endpoint |

| Test | Measurement |
| - | - |
| `ping` | Four ICMP packets, 0.5-second interval, two-second reply timeout and 12-second overall ping deadline |
| `mtr` | Five report cycles with a one-second interval and a maximum of 24 hops |
| `traceroute` | UDP traceroute, one probe per hop, one-second wait per probe and a maximum of 24 hops |

Packet counts, intervals and hop limits are fixed; they are not request parameters. The regional request handler has a 35-second execution budget including target resolution. Allow additional time for HTTP and network transit in your client.

## Examples

Four-packet ping:

```bash theme={"system"}
curl --max-time 45 'https://at.edisglobal.com/api/v1/probes' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{"target":"1.1.1.1","test":"ping","family":"4"}'
```

MTR:

```bash theme={"system"}
curl --max-time 45 'https://at.edisglobal.com/api/v1/probes' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{"target":"1.1.1.1","test":"mtr","family":"4"}'
```

UDP traceroute:

```bash theme={"system"}
curl --max-time 45 'https://at.edisglobal.com/api/v1/probes' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{"target":"1.1.1.1","test":"traceroute","family":"4"}'
```

## Response

Responses contain measurement identity, source, resolved target, address family, `status`, `started`, `durationMs` and `raw` output. Ping adds a `summary`; MTR and traceroute add a `hops` array when available. MTR can also include a destination `summary` when it reaches the target. See the [full response field reference](https://docs.edisglobal.com/looking-glass-api/results.md).

Illustrative MTR `hops` excerpt, not a complete response:

```json theme={"system"}
{
  "hops": [
    {
      "number": 1,
      "address": "192.0.2.1",
      "loss": 0,
      "sent": 5,
      "averageMs": 0.5,
      "minimumMs": 0.4,
      "maximumMs": 0.7,
      "destination": false
    },
    {
      "number": 2,
      "address": "1.1.1.1",
      "loss": 0,
      "sent": 5,
      "averageMs": 2.5,
      "minimumMs": 2.3,
      "maximumMs": 2.8,
      "destination": true
    }
  ]
}
```

The documentation address in the excerpt is illustrative and cannot be used as a probe target. A non-responsive intermediate router does not by itself prove forwarding loss. Interpret loss at later hops and the destination; see [understanding MTR and traceroute](https://docs.edisglobal.com/faq/ip-addresses/understanding-packet-loss-in-mtr-traceroute.md).

Detailed probes can report `partial`, `timeout`, `unavailable` or `output_limit` within an HTTP 200 response. Check the result's `status` as well as the HTTP status.

## Rate limits

**120 requests per minute and 8 concurrent requests per client, per node, shared with TCP port checks.** These limits count requests, not the individual packets inside each measurement. See [rate limits and errors](https://docs.edisglobal.com/looking-glass-api/rate-limits.md).
